Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Arrival in Addis Ababa (Bole International Airport) and you going to greet and welcome by the driver or tourist guide!!Depending on your arrival time, explore the capital city: sightseeing at National Museum of Ethiopia, Holy Trinity Cathedral, and Mount Entoto etc. Overnight: Addis Ababa.
Day 2: Addis Ababa to Lalibela
Fly to Lalibela (approximately 1 hour). Lalibela is known for its incredible rock-hewn churches, carved out of solid rock in the 12th and 13th centuries. Explore the famous 11 monolithic rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most iconic include St. George’s Church (Bete Giyorgis), shaped like a cross, and Bete Medhane Alem, the largest of the churches. Overnight: Lalibela.
Day 3: Visit Asheton Mariam Monastery
Drive to the Asheton Mariam Monastery, located on top of a mountain about 10 km from Lalibela. The monastery is situated at 3,200 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The monastery itself has a rich history, with ancient manuscripts and a peaceful setting. It’s also less crowded than the main churches, offering a serene experience. Overnight: Lalibela.
Day 4: Lalibela to Bahir Dar
In the morning, fly to Bahir Dar, a picturesque city situated on the shores of Lake Tana. Upon arrival, embark on a boat trip to explore the islands of Lake Tana, including the historic monasteries of Ura Kidane Meheret and Kibran Gebriel, where you can admire ancient murals and beautiful views. Overnight: Bahir Dar.
Day 4: Exploring Bahir Dar
In the morning, visit the Blue Nile Falls, also known as "Tis Issat" or "The Smoking Water." Enjoy the scenic beauty of the falls before returning to Bahir Dar for the night. In the afternoon, explore the market. If you have time, visit the Palace of Emperor Haile Selassie, a historic building overlooking Lake Tana. Later, relax and enjoy the serene environment of the city and its surroundings. Overnight: Bahir Dar.
Day 5: Bahir Dar to Gondar
Drive to Gondar, a historic city known for its medieval castles and architectural heritage. Upon arrival, visit the Royal Enclosure, a complex of palaces and fortresses that date back to the 17th century, including Fasiladas’ Castle, the most impressive structure. Explore Fasiladas Bath, a large swimming pool used for the Timkat (Epiphany) celebrations. Enjoy the vibrant culture of the town in the evening. Overnight: Gondar.
Day 6: Gondar to Simien Mountains
Travel to the Simien Mountains National Park, one of Ethiopia’s most stunning natural landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spend the day hiking through the park’s dramatic scenery, with its towering peaks and deep valleys. You may spot wildlife such as gelada baboons, Ethiopian wolves, and the Walia ibex. Stay overnight at a lodge or Debark town. within the park.
Day 7: Simien Mountains to Axum
Drive to Axum via the Limalimo road and Tekeze River. It is the ancient capital of the Aksumite Empire. Overnight: Axum.
Day 8: Visit Axum
Explore the archaeological wonders of the ancient city, including the famous stelae fields, where towering obelisks mark the tombs of ancient kings. Visit the Church of St. Mary of Zion, which is said to house the Ark of the Covenant. Learn about the rich history of the Aksumite civilization, one of Africa's greatest empires. Spend the night in Axum.
Day 9: Axum to Tigray Cherches
Drive to Tigray famous for its ancient rock-hewn churches nestled in the cliffs. Visit the incredible Gheralta churches, such as those at Abreha wa Atsbeha and the breathtaking Maryam Korkor. These churches, often perched on high cliffs, offer both spiritual and physical elevation, with impressive frescoes and scenic vistas. Overnight in Mekelle or Gehralta lodge.
Day 10: Mekelle to Denakil Depression
Embark on a journey to the Denakil Depression, one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth. Known for its surreal landscapes, you will explore salt flats, volcanic craters, and vibrant hot springs. Visit Erta Ale, an active volcano with a continuously bubbling lava lake, and witness the otherworldly beauty of the region. Overnight in the Denakil Depression, in basic accommodations or tents, given the remote nature of the area.
Day 11: Denakil Depression Exploration
Spend the day exploring more of the Denakil Depression. Visit the Danakil Salt Flats and the colorful volcanic deposits of Dallol, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. This landscape, with its bright yellow, green, and red colors, is like no other place on Earth. Experience the extreme conditions while marveling at the bizarre terrain. Spend the night in the area.
Day 12: Denakil Depression to Addis Ababa
After a morning of further exploration in the Denakil Depression, return to Addis Ababa. Depending on the time of arrival, you can visit at the Mercato before enjoying a farewell dinner with Ethiopian cuisine. Overnight in Addis Ababa, or if you have a late flight, head straight to the airport for departure.
Travel Tips
Weather: The Danakil Depression is extremely hot, often reaching temperatures above 45°C (113°F). Be sure to carry plenty of water, wear appropriate clothing (light, breathable fabrics), and protect yourself from the sun.
Health and Safety: Travel to the Danakil Depression requires proper preparation due to its extreme conditions. It’s advisable to go with a professional guide, especially when trekking or camping in remote areas. Ensure you're in good health and take necessary vaccinations.
Road Conditions: Roads in the Danakil Depression and northern Ethiopia can be rough, so expect long, bumpy drives. A 4x4 vehicle is essential, and travel times can vary due to the challenging terrain.
